What a week Week 4 was. Week 4 ran the gamut of emotions for many of us. From the terrifying to the jubilant, Week 4 was a week that none of us will soon forget. Not at all because of fantasy baseball. With all that happened, I don’t think I’m going to discuss much fantasy baseball in this post. To do so seems a bit trivial.
Let’s start off with why we all love sports so much. I was watching the Phillies play the Mets on Sunday night, when a spontaneous “U-S-A” chant erupted. In all honesty, I was pretty much asleep, but I kind of woke up when the chant started. As it turned out, the chant was born out of the reality that Navy SEAL Team 6 had killed Osama bin Laden. The entire stadium, the entire country for that matter, was sharing in the celebration. America, Fuck yeah! I still get chills watching this scene: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ec6mbwT3BrU
For the last 10 years, bin Laden has been the face and the name we have all associated with pure evil. For my generation, this guy has been the boogeyman. Many of us playing fantasy baseball can hardly remember a time when our world wasn’t shaped by the threat of terrorism in one way or another and bin Laden’s name is inextricably linked with terrorism. There are 20 year old kids who can hardly remember the world without him in it.
But, now bin Laden is dead. And I, for one, am very happy about that. In the last couple of days, a couple of people have told me that they are, in a way, ashamed that they’re happy about it. It just doesn’t feel right to them to celebrate another person’s death. Do not include me in that group. I’m ecstatic that he’s dead and I’m not ashamed to say it, feel it, or write. And it’s about damn time.
What does it mean? I don’t know. You’ll have to ask someone a lot smarter than me for a commentary about the repercussions of his death on the war on terror, our safety, etc. All I know is that for a generation of people who grew up associating him with all the evil that we face in the world everyday, it feels like we’re safer now.
Killing him means something. I’m not entirely sure what it means, but it means something. And that something feels good. It feels like victory. It feels rewarding. It feels somewhat unifying. Irrespective of all the other progress our military has made in Afghanistan, and even Iraq, killing bin Laden, at least to me, and I think my generation, signals the victory that we have all anticipated, expected, and long awaited. And like I said, it’s about damn time.
We also made it through some pretty rough weather in Week 4. I was sitting in my office on Wednesday morning when the first tornado hit Chattanooga. The sky turned black and the window to my office was bowing in and out wildly. The weather got a lot worse, though. Areas all around the South were pretty well devastated following Wednesday evening. Everyone in our league made it through, but we all know someone who lost a home, or even a life. So, here’s to them. Our thoughts are with you.
As far as our league goes, Explosive Renteria tied Purple Tigers 6-6. Both Soriano and Cano (the last two Yankee second basemen) hit 4 bombs.
Big Time Timmy Jim beat Carry on Heyward Son 10-2 despite leaving Ben Zobrist on the bench. Heyward Son’s pitching, which looked to be a strength is hurting him. Big Time is a team that hits the baseball, posting a team average of .323.
Let Timmy Smoke clubbed Ruppert Mundys 10-1 on the backs of some really good pitching and nice weeks the brothers Ryan, Braun and Howard.
Tacoby Bellsbury tied Wuertz Case Scenario 6-6. Wuertz Case won every single pitching category, and Tacoby won every single hitting category.
Gangsta pummeled The Lobster 9-2. The Lobster’s pitching is pretty bad and Sam Fuld played like, well, Sam Fuld in Week 4. Shin Soo Choo looks like he’s finally starting to play like, well, Shin Soo Choo. He had a good week for Gangsta.
Honey Badgers beat Haveyouseenmywiener 7-4. Walter lost steals.
