A tie in Week 1 is not really what I was expecting from Explosive Renteria, but I was effectively missing a SS all week. Mike Aviles just made the top of my shit list for not getting a single hit all week. Thanks Mike. Now hit the road. You were 0-for Explosive Renteria. Do not expect a call back. I pretty much hate you forever now. I hope you lose your job when the Royals call up Mike Moustakas. You’re no longer welcome here. Next up on my team is Macier Izturis, who is not a sexy pickup, but has eligibility at 2b, 3b and SS, which will give me some needed depth.
Charlie and I split 3-3 in Hitting and Pitching. I won RBI, Average and OPS and lost by one HR, 7 Runs and 3 SBs. I would have done better to have kept Drew in my lineup and gotten whatever he gave me during the few games he played. Charlie led the league with a 9.17 K/9 and also beat me in SVs (bad move on my part starting Drew Storen instead of Hanrahan), and WHIP.
Charlie and I are now tied for 6th at 6-6. Comparing my numbers against the rest of the league’s makes me feel better about my overall performance. Wuertz Case Scenario is in 1st place after a week, and I would have beaten them 9-3 (losing R, HR, and SB). In fact, I would have beaten all but 2 teams. Gangstas would have beaten me 7-5 (R, HR, RBI, SB, S, ERA, WHIP) and Let Timmy Smoke would have beaten me 8-3-1 (R, HR, RBI, S, K, ERA, WHIP, K/9. So, while a tie is a bit disappointing, I can rest easier knowing that I would have won 75% of my possible matchups last week.
I predicted that Flynner’s Action Jackson’s would beat Brandonwood’s Purple Tigers and they did. Neither team hit the ball particularly well as far as average is concerned, but Flynner was able to put up a very solid 13 HRs and post really good numbers in wins (6, 2nd in the league) and WHIP (1.18). Cuddyer, who produced a .107 AVG and a .307 OPS was absolutely worthless for Brandonwood as he did not put up a single counting number. Not a one. Meanwhile, both Brian Roberts and Adrian Beltre hit .189 for Flynner, but also contributed a combined 13 Runs, 5 HRs, 16 BRIs and 1 SB.
I gave Wuertz Case Scenario the edge over Rupert Mundys and they came through in a big way. The score in this game is a bit misleading, however. Wuertz Case finished no higher than 5th in any offensive category and finished in the lower half of all but one pitching category. Matt Kemp buoyed Wuertz Case and has the potential to do so all year long. Bobby J started not one, but two pitchers on the DL and suffered from a terrible start from his main producer, Pujols. But Sir Albert won’t hit below .200 all year (just ask Tony LaRusa) and neither will Teixeira (he’ll only hit that low until May), so look for a comeback from BobbyJ’s squad.
I didn’t really make a prediction in the matchup between Tacoby Bellsbury and Haveyouseenmywiener, so I lose man points on that dodge. This matchup is difficult to draw anything from, really. Walter’s lineup was not set for the first part of week 1 and he didn’t start accumulating stats until Monday. Jacob left 3 pitchers on his bench and lost Longoria (oblique), Holliday (appendix) and Manny (roids and retirement) for most of the week. Of Course, Walter dominated in SBs. He will all year.
I dodged a real prediction on the Carry on Heyward Son v. Gangsta matchup as well, so subtract a few more man points from me. Gangsta’s offense is really good. He ranked 6th in AVG and OPS, 4th in SBS, 2nd in R and RBI and 1st in HRs. Heyward Son was able to tie him in RBI to prevent a clean offensive sweep. Heyward took home the W in SVs and ERA, but everything else belonged to Gangsta, who suffered from low output from Hanley and Choo, but may have the best fantasy player going right now in Nelson Cruz. Trambo’s autopicks hurt him. Swisher, Thome, Nishioka (broken leg), and Carlos Pena all had subpar weeks. The one bright spot from Trambo’s autodraft was Asdrubal Cabrera, who hit 3 bombs in week 1 to go along with a .316 AVG, .900+ OPS, and a SB.
I predicted that Thriller’s “pitching (which will be sneaky good) [would] carry him to the W.” His pitching is really, really good and it carried him to the W as he won every pitching category except SVs. He has replaced Aroldis Chapman with Brian Wilson now, though, so he shouldn’t worry much about SVs. Lobster’s squad hit 13 bombs last week, which tied him for 2nd in the league. The problem is that Thriller’s squad equaled his power output. Surprisingly, Lobster put up the third highest average in the league for week 1 despite weak AVG from Angel Pagan and Dan Uggla.
