Before we started the draft, we all decided that this would be a keeper league. We will keep four players off of this year’s team for next year.
ROUND 1 | ||
| BobbyJ | Pujols – No shocker here. |
| Flynner | Votto – A bit of a surprise that he didn’t take one of the elite shortstops with the second pick, but it’s hard to argue with Votto’s numbers. |
| Lobster | Cabrera – Maybe Lobster was as drunk as Miggy. Miggy’s power and average numbers are hard to beat, though. |
| Thriller | Braun – My God, when is someone going to take Hanley or Tulo? Still, Braun is a solid selection. |
| Dr. Dunk | Hanley – Finally. |
| Emerson | Tulo – Dammit! I’m next and I was hoping Tulo would fall to 7. |
| Me | Carlos Gonzales – I hope that he duplicates his numbers from last year. Not the safest pick, but he’s #2 on my board, so I can’t pass him up. Power, Speed and Average and he plays 82 games at Coors Field. Gotta get him. |
| Walter | Crawford – Solid. You’ll see that Walter’s team will steal some bases. |
| Brandonwood | Cano – Power and Average at 2B is hard to beat, especially in that Yankee lineup. |
| Jacob | Longo – Poised for a big year, I think. I like getting the top rated 3B in the game because that position is fairly scarce. |
| Charlie | Adrian Gonzaes – He’s hoping that Fenway will bring more homers than PetCo Park for the big lefty. |
| Trambo | David Wright – Assuming he hits for some power (not circa 2009), Wright is as good an all around fantasy contributor as there is. |
ROUND 2 | ||
| Trambo | Josh Hamilton – Great get. |
| Charlie | Halladay – The first P taken and the best P available. Chalk him up for 200+ innings, 200+ Ks, low ERA, low WHIP and lots of W’s. |
| Jacob | Holliday – Holliday is an across the board contributor. |
| Brandonwood | Zimmerman – Best 3B available at a fairly scarce position. |
| Walter | Youk – 1B, 3B eligibility. Lots of runs, solid HR, RBI and Average. With the walks he takes, his OPS will play well for Walter. |
| Me | Fielder – 1B’s are falling fast and I want a good one. Fielder is in a contract year and will hit for a higher average this year I hope-he’s better than .260. Plus, in a down year, he still hit 30+ HRs. Maybe I should have taken Teixeira, but I like Fielder more this year. Hopefully he’ll pay off. |
| Emerson | Kemp – With a slight bump in Average, Emerson is getting first round value with this pick. |
| Dr. Dunk | Neson Cruz – If his hamstrings are healthy, Cruz is a fantasy stud. 30/20 guy. |
| Thriller | Lincecum – Thriller loves him some Giants, plus he needs Timmy on his team. |
| Lobster | ARod – Gotta have a good 3B. I doubt he’ll run too much this year in order to preserve himself, but he’s tearing it up in Spring Training. |
| Flynner | Mauer – Flynner really wanted a catcher I guess. Maybe Mauer’s 2009 power will return, otherwise… |
| BobbyJ | Teixeira – Can’t argue with this. I thought about taking him 6 picks ago. |
ROUND 3 | ||
| BobbyJ | F. Hernadez – The King. Nice Anchor to the rotation. |
| Flynner | A. Beltre – Solid 3B. Hopefully he puts numbers like he’s in a contract year |
| Lobster | Uggla – Could be great in Atlanta. For Lobster’s sake, let’s hope so. |
| Thriller | Ryan Howard – Big time power. Hopefully his age doesn’t catch up with him. |
| Dr. Dunk | Choo – 20/20 is a lock. 30/30 not out of the realm of possibilities. |
| Emerson | Morneau – Modern medicine will prevail upon his concussion at some point and he'll produce. |
| Me | Pedroia – I like Pedroia and I like having a good 2B. If healthy, he has very good numbers, especially in that lineup this year. |
| Walter | Cliff Lee – A good fantasy Ace. Low WHIP, plenty of K’s. |
| Brandonwood | Jose Reyes – Speed at a scarce position. |
| Jacob | Kinsler – When he’s healthy, he may be the best 2B option out there. |
| Charlie | B. Phillips – 20/20 is in play. |
| Trambo | McCutchen – This guy is a beast, possible 30/30 and maybe this year’s Carlos Gonzales. This is a keeper league, mind you. |
ROUND 4 | ||
| Trambo | Lester – Top Pitcher on my board. A definite Cy Young candidate with that offense behind him. |
| Charlie | J. Upton – Man, if he can put it all together, he could hit 40 bombs and steal 30 bases, maybe 40/40. He's young and this is a keeper league. |
| Jacob | Dunn – Big time power. |
| Brandonwood | Kershaw – Nasty left handed curveball and gaining experience. He could be the best lefty in baseball. |
| Walter | Sabbathia – Solid and reliable. |
| Me | Bautista – Yeah, I know 50+ HRs is not likely to happen again, but I’ll take the power at this position even if he drops off by 20 HRs. |
| Emerson | Utley – Will he play before the All Star break? |
| Dr. Dunk | Ichiro – .300 average is a given. Hopefully he’ll still run and score runs. |
| Thriller | Werth – Good power and speed. I like Werth. Plus, Thriller needed a good beard on his team. |
| Lobster | Ethier – Upside 35 HRs. Downside 25 HRs. That’s good production. |
| Flynner | Heyward – A star in the making and really good right now. Maybe he could be a little more aggressive at the plate, but this kid is gonna be great. Keeper league. |
| BobbyJ | J. Rollins – He’s in decline. When he plays, he’s not as good as he used to be. When he doesn’t, he’s worthless. Still, the upside for some power and lots of speed is undeniable at this scarce position. |
ROUND 5 | ||
| BobbyJ | Posey – Best young Catcher in the game. |
| Flynner | Carpenter – He’s getting old and doesn’t strike out too many anymore. I’d rather have young pitching, but his production is always there…so are the health risks. |
| Lobster | McCann – Solid Catcher. I like him later in the draft. |
| Thriller | Jeter – Maybe he’ll be better at age 95 than he was at age 94. If he produces like he did in 2009, this is a great pick. If he produces like he did in 2010, it's just an OK pick. |
| Dr. Dunk | Verlander – Sit back and enjoy a great year from this guy. He generally starts slow, but he’s made some adjustments this year. He’s a good one. |
| Emerson | V. Martinez – Dammit Emerson! I love VMart. He’ll be better than McCann and will not have to catch all the time in Detroit. |
| Me | Pence – 20/20 guy. Underrated. Maybe he can bump that average a little this year. |
| Walter | Rios – Maybe I should have taken Rios. He could easily be 20/30 and is hitting in a great lineup. |
| Brandonwood | Ubaldo – He throws 95 like I throw rocks, very easy. Explosive stuff; just waiting for him to have a complete year. |
| Jacob | Ellsbury – Of course he did. Well, he'll steal lots of bases and Adrian Beltre isn't there to break his ribs again this year. |
| Charlie | M. Young – Solid average, can play anywhere. Useful pick. |
| Trambo | C. Santana – Behind Posey as the best C in the game. He walks a lot, which will help his OPS. |
ROUND 6 | ||
| Trambo | K. Morales – He’s hurt. In fairness, though, this was an auto pick. |
| Charlie | BJ Upton – Will steal 45 bases. Will he do anything else? Nice work creating a monopoly on Uptons, though, Charlie. |
| Jacob | Victorino – Good speed. Will contribute some power. |
| Brandonwood | Jay Bruce – This may be the year he puts it all together. Remember he’s just 22. |
| Walter | Weeks – Power and speed at 2B? Yes, please. |
| Me | Josh Johnson – When he’s healthy, he is unhittable. With a little run support this year, I can see him being a top 3 fantasy pitcher. I’ll take that upside all day everyday in round 6. |
| Emerson | Hamels – Sneaky good K/9. He’s for real. |
| Dr. Dunk | T. Hanson – If the Braves would have scored him some runs last year in the second half, he would have been a top 10 P. |
| Thriller | Haren – Very consistent, but his K/9 has fallen each of the last 2 years. |
| Lobster | Elvis Andrus – Speed? Yes. Maybe he hits .280. Could have waited and gotten him later. A lot later. |
| Flynner | Stanton – Flynner chiming in with the second of my top 2 keepers. Stanton has 45 HR potential and you may see it this year. |
| BobbyJ | D. Price – The only drawback is the number of times he plays the Red Sox and the Yankees. But, he always pitches pretty well against them. Coupled with King Felix, BobbyJ has a very good one-two punch. |
ROUND 7 | ||
| BobbyJ | Aramis Ramirez – Due for a bounce back year. |
| Flynner | Grienke – When he gets over his rib fracture, he’ll dominate the NL Central. Hopefully he’s more durable than Ellsbury. Good 7th round value though. |
| Lobster | Matt Cain – Again, I think Lobster acted a bit prematurely. Cain is good, but he’s 10th round good. |
| Thriller | P. Sandoval – He’s slimmer and due for a bounce back year. Plus, he plays for the Giants. |
| Dr. Dunk | Prado – Multi position eligibility makes him a valuable fantasy asset. |
| Emerson | Pedro Alvarez – Best (really) young 3B in the game right now. Big time power enhances his value. So does hitting behind Tabata and McCutcheon. |
| Me | Scherzer – Not many were better than Scherzer in the 2nd half last year. His stuff is filthy and if he pitches the way he did after being sent down last year, he has big time K/9 potential. |
| Walter | Oswalt – Steady as steady goes. |
| Brandonwood | Billy Butler – Will hit .300. Will hit 20 bombs. Will drive in close to 100 runs. He’s solid. |
| Jacob | J. Weaver – Good K/9; good stuff. I have him ranked just below Scherzer this year and strongly considered taking him instead. |
| Charlie | Alexei Ramirez – Could go 15/20 at SS. |
| Trambo | Liriano – He has electric stuff. Has potential to be a top 10 P. Good value here, I think. |
ROUND 8 | ||
| Trambo | Gallardo – Trambo’s staff is starting to look good. Gallardo is the Opening Day Starter with Greinke on the DL. |
| Charlie | Billingsley – Let him put a whole season together and see if you don’t like him. |
| Jacob | Papelbon – First closer taken and its Pap. He’ll get his chances, but I worry about the decline in his fastball. |
| Brandonwood | Neftali Feliz – Remember what I said about Ubaldo? Feliz does the same thing, only he throws upper 90s. Hopefully the Rangers will keep him as the Closer all year and not pull a Joba with him. |
| Walter | Mcgehee – 2010 proved 2009 wasn’t a fluke. This guy can rake. |
| Me | Marmol – We play in a K/9 league. Marmol strikes out everyone he faces and can carry a staff with his K/9 ratio. I like to have one really good closer. Aside from having to pull for the Cubs to win, I really like Marmol. |
| Emerson | Latos – He should only miss one start as he opens the year on the DL. |
| Dr. Dunk | Chris Young – The Outfielder. He is starting to make more contact and his power/speed combination is undeniable. A potential monster pick in the 8th round. |
| Thriller | B. Wilson – Another Giant, eh? I worry about his back. Thriller now has the two best beards in baseball. |
| Lobster | C. Bucholtz – Maybe the best changeup in the game. He just doesn’t strike people out. At least he hasn’t yet. |
| Flynner | D. Stubbs – Potential 30/30 guy. A lot like Mike Cameron used to be, great power, great speed, not so great average. In this round, though, I really like the pick. |
| BobbyJ | C. Rasmus – This may be the year for Colby. Apparently he didn’t see eye to eye with Tony LaRussa for portions of the season last year. That is no longer a distraction. Like Stubbs, he has 30/20 or 30/30 potential with some more upside in the average department. He just needs a spot in the batting order. |
ROUND 9 | ||
| BobbyJ | T. Hunter – Old but solid. .270 and 20+ HRs is a lock. |
| Flynner | Soria – If KC can win any games, Soria can close them out. |
| Lobster | A. Pagan – Lobster, you could have gotten this guy and his 30 steals and 10 HRs five rounds later. |
| Thriller | K. Johnson – Power at 2B? Kelly will give you that. But, he’s not a Giant… |
| Dr. Dunk | P. Konerko – If he can duplicate his 2010, he’s a beast. |
| Emerson | H. Bell – Great closer. Can’t argue with this one. |
| Me | S. Drew – Did you know Drew is one of the fastest players in the game? From looking at his SB numbers you wouldn’t, but he actually is. New Manager, Kurt Gibson is going to let him run more this year. I can see 15/15, maybe even 20/20, from my SS and I’ll take that. |
| Walter | Mariano Rivera – Steadiest closer in the game. |
| Brandonwood | J. Bay – Citi Field may sap some of his power, but he’s awesome when he’s healthy. Remember he was 30/30 just a couple years ago. |
| Jacob | Zobrist – Can play 2B. Hopefully he has a 2009-esque year. If so, a steal in round 9. |
| Charlie | G. Soto – Best OPS of any C in baseball in 2010. |
| Trambo | Granderson – 20 HRs, 20 SBs, 20 doubles and 20 triples. Has anybody else on this board ever done that? Nope. |
ROUND 10 | ||
| Trambo | K Rod – A good closer with age concerns and also problems with the law. Still, when he’s playing, he’s good. |
| Charlie | C. Hart – 20/20 type of guy. Watch out for injuries though. |
| Jacob | S. Castro – This one is a head scratcher. Castro is going to be a good SS. He’s just not going to contribute that much this year. It’s a keeper league, though, so hopefully Castro will hit .300 again and maybe start to run a little bit to recover some value for Jacob. |
| Brandonwood | D. Young – It’s easy to forget that this guy is 25 years old. He’s really just starting to realize his potential. I think his ceiling is about what he did last year, .298/21/112, but that’s pretty damn good. He may get to 25 HRs and he may steal 10 bags, too. |
| Walter | Bourn – Walter gets some more speed to go along with Crawford. |
| Me | S. Marcum – I’m not worried about his shoulder and neither is he. He pitched very well in the AL East and now moves to the NL Central. Good things are ahead for Marcum…I hope. |
| Emerson | Thornton – He’s gonna be the ChiSox closer and he’s got good stuff. |
| Dr. Dunk | Wandy Rodriguez – 1st half Wandy is not that good. 2nd half Wandy is great. Despite a bad first half, Wandy got to a 3.60 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 178 Ks last year. Look at his stats for the last three years and see if you see a trend. Hint: you will, they look a lot like last year’s and that’s not bad, especially in the 10th round. |
| Thriller | Rajai Davis – Thriller gets him some speed to go with the Kung Fu Panda. |
| Lobster | R. Soriano – He’s not closing. Rivera is not hurt. In the 10th round, this is a bad speculative pick. In the 20th round, OK. |
| Flynner | B. Roberts – Bad backs scare me, but Roberts will be hitting atop a revamped lineup that will have some pop. He should run and score plenty of runs. I like getting him here. |
| BobbyJ | P. Hughes – Opposite of Wandy without the track record, but with more potential. |
ROUND 11 | ||
| BobbyJ | Demster – Solid pick, not a sexy pick and he strikes people out. |
| Flynner | C. Lewis – See Comments on Dempster. |
| Lobster | M. Ordonez – May contribute in average and potentially RBI, otherwise, he's useless. Rounds 10 and 11 have not been good to Lobster. |
| Thriller | Lilly – Will be pitching in Dodger Stadium and will strike people out. He’ll have really good numbers this year. Good sleeper pick. |
| Dr. Dunk | Adam Jones – He’s not Pac Man. He’s hit 19 HRs in each of the last two years and is poised for a breakout year. I really wanted him in this round. |
| Emerson | Markakis – Probably the best all around contributor left on the board. I would have taken Jones for his upside before Markakis, but I wanted one of the two and these two jerks took them both. |
| Me | Adam Lind – Let’s get back to 2009 Adam Lind, not 2010 Adam Lind. I like .305/35/114 better than .237/23/72. Also, I think he’s the type of player that is closer to 2009 than 2010. Hope I’m right. |
| Walter | Ian Desmond – Good young SS. Needs some plate discipline, but has upside. |
| Brandonwood | Huff – Other than speed, he’ll put up solid numbers. The question is, when will he give way to Brandon Belt? |
| Jacob | Napoli – He hits bombs. If the Rangers get him some ABs, he’ll be a good source of power from behind the plate. |
| Charlie | Garza – A move out of the AL East and into the NL Central is a good thing for fantasy value, but Garza is a fly ball pitcher in Wrigley Field. Beware of the long ball. |
| Trambo | Broxton – When his head is right, he’s a very valuable, almost dominant closer. |
ROUND 12 | ||
| Trambo | B. Anderson – Lots of value in this 12th round pick. |
| Charlie | C. Perez – If the Indians win any games, he’ll close them out. |
| Jacob | T. Hudson – Elite ERA, great pitcher, but he doesn’t get a lot of Ks. I really like Huddy, but I’d rather have him on my real team than my fantasy team. |
| Brandonwood | Cuddyer – Versatile and solid. |
| Walter | M. Montero – This guy could hit .300 this year and he's a catcher. 15 HRs is also conceivable. |
| Me | Hellickson – Keeper league. I think Hell Boy is the best rookie pitcher in the game…right now. |
| Emerson | Carlos Lee – .314/28/100, .300/26/102, .246/24/89. Lee’s stat lines from the past 3 years. The obvious outlier is his average from last year. He may not get back up to .300, but I think he’ll be closer to it than he will be to .246 this year. |
| Dr. Dunk | J. Nathan – He’s dominant if his arm is healthy. |
| Thriller | B. Gardner – Some speed to go with Rajai. Still, not a Giant... |
| Lobster | C. Ruiz – Like Tim Hudson, I would rather have this guy on my team than my fantasy team. |
| Flynner | H. Kuroda – If he puts up a sub 3.50 ERA and a sub 1.20 WHIP again this year, he should win more than 11 games. |
| BobbyJ | J. Axford – He closes and he strikes people out. That’s what you want out of the guy. Plus, he has the best 'stache in the game. |
ROUND 13 | ||
| BobbyJ | A. Hill – His .205 average from last year was mostly the result of being extremely unlucky as he had a sub .200 BABIP. He may not get back to the .280 range from 2009, but I think he’ll stay around .255-.265 to go along with 30 HR potential. Out of your 2B, that’s pretty damn good. |
| Flynner | Furcal – Health is an issue. Ability is not. |
| Lobster | M. Beuhrle – See Tim Hudson. |
| Thriller | H. Street – Solid closer, but will be on the either the hot seat or the DL or both some time this year. |
| Dr. Dunk | Beckham – Upside out the wazoo. |
| Emerson | D. Hudson – Will he repeat his blistering 2nd half from last year? No. Is he a great value in the 13th round? Yes. |
| Me | J. Sanchez – Sticking with my K/9 fetish. Sanchez has great stuff. When he gets it over the plate, he can be unhittable (literally. Just ask the Padres). Glad I got him before Thriller. |
| Walter | J. Pierre – More speed for Walter. |
| Brandonwood | Figgins – A little speed for Brandonwood. |
| Jacob | Danks – Good value pick in the 13th. |
| Charlie | Vlad – He’s old. He swings at too many balls. He’ll put up exceptional numbers. This guy has always defied logic. I wouldn’t be shocked if he stole 10 bags. |
| Trambo | N. Swisher – 29 HRs each of the last 2 years. Last year he did it with a .288 average. |
ROUND 14 | ||
| Trambo | B. Myers – 2010: 223 innings, 3.14 ERA. |
| Charlie | F. Cordero – See Houston Street. He has a guy behind him who throws 106mph. |
| Jacob | D. Ortiz – Papi has an unbelievable lineup around him. Put up with a slow start, enjoy a solid finish. |
| Brandonwood | J.J. Putz – Closer with job security who struck more than 10 per 9 last year. What’s not to like? |
| Walter | A. Laroche -- .260+, 25 HRs, 85 RBI every year (100 RBI last year). Those are numbers you can count on. |
| Me | B. Abreu – Name one guy on this list who has hit 15 HRs and stolen 20 bags in each of the last 10 years. There’s not one. Add in the fact that he drives in some runs, too and there’s a lot to like about Bobby…though not his age. |
| Emerson | Sean Rodriguez – He could be good if he gets a chance to play. Not a good pick in this round as he’ll likely be fighting for at bats all year. |
| Dr. Dunk | Gio Gonzales – He needs to improve his WHIP a little, but there’s a lot to like about this guy. |
| Thriller | M. Reynolds – He can mash. He can also miss. A lot. He is who he is and he ain’t bad. 35 HRs is definitely in the cards for him in Baltimore. |
| Lobster | T. Helton – He’s a VFL and I love him. He is not a good fantasy pick anymore. |
| Flynner | Bumgardner – Keeper league. The guy is good too. |
| BobbyJ | A. Bailey – I worry about his elbow. He’s already been to see Dr. James Andrews once this Spring. |
ROUND 15 | ||
| BobbyJ | A. Escobar – He’ll get a chance to run a lot in KC. |
| Flynner | J. Valverde – Somebody has to close. |
| Lobster | R. Franklin – See J. Valverde. |
| Thriller | T. Cahill – I think this is a great value pick. Watch his K’s go up this year. |
| Dr. Dunk | F. Francisco – He’s the closer in Toronto. For now. |
| Emerson | Carlos Beltran – He’s set to play in game 1. He’s in a contract year with something to prove. He’s super talented. These are good things. He is uber injury prone. This is a bad thing. |
| Me | Matt Wieters – He may suck again. He may live up to the hype. I hope for the latter. |
| Walter | C. Quentin – Some power to go along with the speed on Walter's team. |
| Brandonwood | R. Nolasco – When he’s on, he’s dominant. When he’s off, he’s in the minors. This could very well be the year he puts together a complete season and gives Brandonwood a great return on his 15th round investment. |
| Jacob | Manny – Playing for a contract next year. He’ll DH. He’ll hit. He’ll be Manny. |
| Charlie | Morrow – Best stuff of anybody not drafted in the first 8 rounds. He may lead MLB starters in K/9. I wanted him. |
| Trambo | C. Pena – See Mark Reynolds. |
ROUND 16 | ||
| Trambo | G. Sizemore – Shocker, he’s going to start the year on the DL. Maybe he’ll produce after he gets off. But, if he doesn’t run, he’s an OF who hits .260 with 20-25 HRs. Meh. |
| Charlie | D. Lee – He’s better than his numbers last year. I look for a bit of a rebound in Baltimore. |
| Jacob | J. Zimmerman – Just wait until Strasburg gets back next year. The one-two punch of he and Zimmerman is going to scare some folks because Zimmerman is good. |
| Brandonwood | Y. Escobar – He has more power than he showed last year and he plays in a good park to exploit it. |
| Walter | V. Wells – 31 bombs last year. |
| Me | Jhoulys Chacin – Struck out 138 in 114 IP last year, but walked 61. He had a 3.28 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP. Lower the walks and keep everything else the same, Jhoulys, and you could be my best pick in the draft. |
| Emerson | CJ Wilson – He’s the Opening Day starter and he struck out more a batter per inning last year. |
| Dr. Dunk | Beckett – He’s pretty good every other year and he sucked last year. He’ll win games regardless of his ERA, which should be a lot lower than the 5.78 he posted last year. |
| Thriller | R. Romero – He held his own in the AL East last year despite a late season slump. He’ll be fine, especially if he harnesses his control a little more. |
| Lobster | Jaime Gacia – Finally a rational pick. |
| Flynner | Aybar – He’ll run and hit close to .300. He might even score some runs. For a 16th round SS, what more do you want? |
| BobbyJ | H. Kendrick – He’s a 10/10 guy waiting to breakout into a 15/20 guy. And he hits .300. |
ROUND 17 | ||
| BobbyJ | Matusz – Along with Hell Boy, he’s maybe the best young pitcher in the AL east. Look at his numbers from August and September last year and get excited. |
| Flynner | E. Volquez – The talent/stuff is there. |
| Lobster | Cueto – Ditto from Volquez. |
| Thriller | I. Kennedy – He struck over 7 batters every 9 innings and had a 3.80 ERA last year, his first as a full time starter. I would expect much of the same for him this year. |
| Dr. Dunk | Craig Kimbrel – Eventually he’ll close for the Braves and the guy strikes out about everybody he faces and doesn’t walk. |
| Emerson | AJ Burnette – Like Nuke LaLouche, he has a (multi)million dollar arm, but a 2 cent head. At this point he is what he is. In the 17th round, this is a good value. |
| Me | D. Storen – The Nationals’ other first round pick in 2009. He has closer’s job and has the stuff to dominate. |
| Walter | G. Sanchez – This guy needs to hit a few more HRs to be a good fantasy 1B, but he can do it. Add that to a very good average and he looks like a great prospect. |
| Brandonwood | J. Vazquez – He’s just so much better when he doesn’t pitch in or for New York. Watch his velocity though. |
| Jacob | Lidge – See AJ Burnette. |
| Charlie | James Shields – Big game James. See Tim Hudson. |
| Trambo | Asdrubal Cabrera – In fairness, this was an auto pick as Trambo skipped the draft in favor of a bachelor party in New Orleans. Cabrera hits for a good average and is exceptionally average at everything else. |
ROUND 18 | ||
| Trambo | Nishioka – I have no idea about this guy. Google him and see that he was really good in Japan. So was Kaz Matsui. |
| Charlie | A. Torres – 16 bombs and 26 bags to go along with 84 runs in his first full season. |
| Jacob | J. Peavy – Age and injury concerns are his downside. |
| Brandonwood | C. Jones – Miraculously, Chipper is playing again this year. I wouldn’t expect more than 130 games out of him, but there’s no doubt he can be very productive in those games. |
| Walter | Brandon Lyon – He’s closing for now and there is value in that. His K rates are not very good and neither is his fastball. Matt Lindstrom closed some for the Astros last year and will push to close again. |
| Me | Freddie Freeman – Keeper league. Freeman is a top prospect and has a gig at 1B. I doubt he’ll hit for much power this year, but he’s just 21. Honestly, he probably wont ever crack my lineup this year, but his upside is enough to spend a draft pick on him. |
| Emerson | Kevin Slowey – What shitty name for a pitcher. He’s been moved to the pen and will not start the season as a Twins starter. This means he has very little value. Don’t draft him. |
| Dr. Dunk | K. Suzuki – With Ichiro and Kurt, Dr. D has cornered the market on major league Suzukis. He’s a catcher. He may hit 15 bombs. |
| Thriller | Jose Lopez – Not much to say about Jose. Don’t think Thriller meant to draft this guy. You shouldn’t either. |
| Lobster | Bronson Arroyo – I’ll bet everybody in the league owns this guy at least once this year. Right before they drop him. |
| Flynner | E. Encarnacion – Remember 2006 when he hit 26 bombs and we thought he’d be good? He’s not. But he did hit 21 bombs last year and he has an everyday job at 1B/DH this year, so this isn’t a bad speculative pick in the 18th round. He could conceivably hit 30 bombs. |
| BobbyJ | Travis Wood – Most of BobbyJ’s picks are auto picks by now too. He didn’t make it to the draft and participated over IM until being drug away by his nuts and leaving his team to the highest available player. Wood’s not a bad get though. |
ROUND 19 | ||
| BobbyJ | I. Stewart – Eventually he’ll be worth a shit. |
| Flynner | Neil Walker – In 426 at bats last year, he hit .296/12/66 playing a position, 2B, that he’d never played. Project that over a full season and you’re looking at around 17 HRs and 93 RBIs. At 2B. That is close to Pedroia’s value a mere 16 rounds later. |
| Lobster | M. Moreland – He has the 1B job in Texas, but he might give up some ABs to Mike Napoli and Chris Davis. He’s projected to get 500 ABs. He hit 9 HR and drove in 25 in 125 ABs last year. Give him 500 ABs with that production this year and he’s looking at 30 HRs and 86 RBI. I’ll take that value in round 19. |
| Thriller | Brandon Belt – Keeper league. This kid will rake whenever he’s called up. |
| Dr. Dunk | Jair Jurjens – See Tim Hudson only not as good in real life. |
| Emerson | Chris Coglan – Sophomore slump is over. He’s playing Center for the Marlins and may get 2B/3B eligibility as well. He should score a bunch of runs hitting in front of Hanley, Gabby Sanchez and Mike Stanton and 25 SBs is not out of the question. |
| Me | Travis Snider – Anybody with 30 HR potential and a job is worth a look in the 19th round. |
| Walter | Chase Headley – PetCo saps what little power he has. He does run a good bit for a 3B. |
| Brandonwood | Posada – A DH with C eligibility who doesn’t have to catch. He’s getting old, but he’s still productive. |
| Jacob | J. Damon – He won’t run as much, but he loves being in Tampa and that may rejuvenate him enough to be a good late round bargain. |
| Charlie | Polanco – Good average. Not much else. |
| Trambo | Wade Davis – Has a really high ceiling and more than held his own last year in the grueling AL East. |
ROUND 20 | ||
| Trambo | Lance Berkman – Auto pick special. I wouldn’t draft him. |
| Charlie | Joel Pinero – See Jair Jurrjens. |
| Jacob | John Lackey – He’s OK, but he pitches for the Sox, so he should get plenty of opportunities for a W. |
| Brandonwood | Julio Teheran – He’s 20 years old and is the best prospect in the Braves’ organization. He should get called up this year. Keeper league special. This kid will be good. |
| Walter | Hideki Matsui – All I can think of is the line from Knocked Up. "I got Matsui." |
| Me | Ike Davis – This was probably a very dumb pick for me. I needed speed and I already drafted Freeman. Davis has some pop and some upside, but I should have drafted Tabata, who I really like this year, with this pick. I thought I could get both. I screwed this up. Anyone want Ike Davis? |
| Emerson | D. Span – Great value pick right here. 100 Runs and 30 SBs is not out of the question. |
| Dr. Dunk | Jose Tabata – Like I just said, I really like Tabata this year. He is Denard Span with more upside. He could be a 10/35 guy with 100 runs. |
| Thriller | Aroldis Chapman – He can throw a baseball 106 miles per hour. Seriously. He won’t be behind Cordero for long. Great value, especially in a keeper league. |
| Lobster | Leo Nunez – He’s a closer with a job. There’s value in that. This was an auto pick as were many of Lobster’s late round picks. He, too, opted to miss the draft and skip the last few rounds. |
| Flynner | R. Ibanez – Hit .309 in the 2nd half last year. He has some pop, but he’s 38 years old. He could hit 20 bombs or he could hit 10. |
| BobbyJ | Kevin Gregg – He’s a closer with a job. For now. |
ROUND 21 | ||
| BobbyJ | L. Scott – See Travis Snider, only older and with less upside. He should have been drafted earlier. A nice auto draft pick up. |
| Flynner | Gavin Floyd – Over a 12 start stretch last year, Floyd posted a 1.19 ERA. If that kind of upside isn’t worth a 21st round draft pick, I don’t know what is. |
| Lobster | James Loney – Another auto pick. He’s the hitting version of Tim Hudson. |
| Thriller | Miguel Tejada – Thriller just couldn’t resist taking another Giant. Tejada can provide some decent late round value as a SS. |
| Dr. Dunk | David Freese – Depending on his playing time, Freese could be a good late round sleeper. He doesn’t him many HRs though. |
| Emerson | David Murphy – Murphy may play Center instead of Julio Borbon. He has 20/20 potential with 600 ABs, though he’s more likely to get around 400 ABs. |
| Me | Dexter Fowler – Remember how I said I needed speed? Fowler has speed to burn, but he doesn’t use it on the basepaths all that much. He has a very high upside and looks like he will win the CF job. He has 25-30 SB potential, but I may need to look elsewhere (Michael Brantley?) for stolen bases. |
| Walter | Randy Wolf – A 3.23 ERA in 2009. A 4.17 ERA in 2010. He turns 34 this year, so I think the 4.17 ERA is what we can expect. Still, not a bad option in the 21st round. |
| Brandonwood | Carlos Zambrano – See AJ Burnette. A lot of upside if he can get his shit together. A 1.41 ERA in his last 11 starts shows that he’s still got it. |
| Jacob | Coco Crisp – He has 40 SB potential. I should have taken him instead of Fowler. He could also hit 15 bombs, but 10 is more likely. |
| Charlie | Garret Jones – He hit under .200 in the second half, but hit 21 HRs (19 after opening day). He’s fighting for ABs too. Proceed with caution. |
| Trambo | Jim Thome – Still has plenty of pop in that old bat. |
ROUND 22 | ||
| Trambo | F. Rodney – He’s the closer for now. |
| Charlie | Kuo – If Broxton fails, it’s Kuo’s job. |
| Jacob | Daniel Bard – A nice handcuff for Papelbon. This guy is filthy. |
| Brandonwood | Marco Scutaro – Brandonwood will drop him soon. |
| Walter | Johan Santana – Could provide some good value in the 2nd half of the season, assuming the Mets let him pitch. If you’re patient enough to keep him in your DL spot, a late round draft and stash is not a terrible idea. |
| Me | Michael Pineda – This kid is really good and he’s going to be the M’s 5th starter. He will provide some really good starts and probably some bad ones. For such a great fastball, he also has good control. If he can work out a couple of off speed compliments to his fastball, he could really provide some value. He is a keeper league special. |
| Emerson | Danny Valencia – Modest power, but he’s a .300 hitter at 3B. |
| Dr. Dunk | Ryan Raburn – He hit .315 with 13 jacks over the last 2 months of the season. He has legit power. He probably won’t get 600 ABs, but could hit 20 bombs in 400. |
| Thriller | Scott Rolen – Unlikely to repeat his 2010 performance given his age, but he’s a good backup 3B who will be available late in drafts. |
| Lobster | Brandon League – David Aardsma has a bad hip, so League will be closing for the M’s to start the season. |
| Flynner | Franklin Gutierrez – It’s too bad we don’t measure defense in fantasy baseball because Gutierrez would be an all star. He has 20/20 type of upside though. |
| BobbyJ | David Aardsma – Won’t be the opening day closer for the M’s, but will get his shot if and when his hip gets fully healed. |
ROUND 23 | ||
| BobbyJ | Austin Jackson – No player in the game had a higher BABIP than Jackson, making his .293 average a bit of an aberration. Don’t expect that kind of average from him this year. He strikes out all the time. He does have legit speed though, so 30 SBs is a possibility. |
| Flynner | Octavio Dotel – He’ll start the year on the DL and is behind Francisco for the Jays’ closer duties. He’ll get dropped. |
| Lobster | Matt Joyce – He’ll get some ABs in the Rays’ outfield. He has some pop in his bat, so if he can get enough ABs, 20 HRs is not out of the question. |
| Thriller | Freddy Sanchez – He’s a Giant, so Thriller drafted him. |
| Dr. Dunk | Juan Uribe – He plays everywhere and he hits bombs. He doesn’t hit for much average, but his versatility is very valuable, especially in the late rounds. |
| Emerson | Ty Wiggington – See Juan Uribe, only with fewer ABs. |
| Me | Joel Hanrahan – He’s a closer with a job and he strikes out a lot of people when he’s on the mound. If he blows up and loses his job to Evan Meek, I’ll drop him. If he takes the closer job and runs with it, I got a steal of pick and maybe a nice piece of trade bait, assuming Storen is as good as advertised. |
| Walter | Johnny Venters – He’ll get some saves and won’t hurt you if he’s not closing full time. |
| Brandonwood | Anibal Sanchez – For late round picks, Sanchez is a good option. He has very good upside, though he needs to cut down on his walks. |
| Jacob | Stephen Strasburg – He’s a borderline first round pick when healthy. Stash and keep keeper league special. |
| Charlie | Ryan Theriot – He’ll steal some bases and maybe score some runs. He needs to work on taking walks, though. |
| Trambo | Jorge De La Rosa – He can miss bats with both strikes and balls. As late round fliers go, he’s a good one. Pretty high upside, but expect some rough outings from him. |
